After 10 days my son has had a bandage and splint taken off his hand after an accident at work. He's an apprentice glazier and 22 years old. Surgery didn't help as the bones were also crushed so the wounds were cleaned and tidied up and after a couple of days at the Royal North Shore Hospital he could go home.
He posted this photo on his facebook wall tonight and all the shock and sadness enveloped me again.
I'm not posting this for sympathy because as my son said "S**t happens" but at the moment blogging regularly is something I'll do when I can deal with this as well as he is dealing with it.

I'm so sorry Robyn. Your poor, young son. It reminds me of all our young men who get hurt/killed in war. Just so sad.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think we mothers get more sad and dwell on it then our children, when they are hurt. They are young and courageous and carry on with life, but we still feel the initial pains.
God will use his sufferings to make good out of them. I will say a prayer for him. I can't imagine the pain he went through. love,andrea
I know this won't be much reassurance at the moment Robyn, but he'll loose some dexterity but should have good functional and strength grip in that hand with time. From your DTE comments, he seems to be a resilient and level headed young man. You must be (apprehesive but..) very proud of him.

Robyn, I think that one has to look on the bright side, and even though they seem few and far between the chinks of darkness, the fact that he has his thumb intact is good. Yes, there will be more than moments of frustration, but from your comments, he is strong young man emontionally. Hugs to you.

ReplyDeleteI just popped over to check out your blog after seeing your lavender tip on down-to-earth. It took me a couple of seconds to realise what the problem was in the picture because my DH and DD were born with fingers just like that! None of them are 'full length', usually stopping just after the first joint. I know it must be horrible seeing your son marred this way but I had to comment to let you know the people I know with hands like this cope just fine. My father-in-law (again the same- it's genetic) is even a professional guitarist so there's really nothing it stops them from doing. I'm sure it will take some adjusting but everything is still possible.

Robyn it is distressing and kids post everything on FB. My 16 year old had a fight with a chainsaw, thank god he only need stitches. Take care.
ReplyDeleteOh Robyn that is heart breaking your son sure has a good attitude. It is awful to have to watch our children deal with horrible accidents especially at work. I remember when my M had her concussion how you sent kind words for her and she and I really appreciated them. I wish I could give you a hug.

ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your kind comments and support. He had the stitches removed on Thursday and has been given the names and phone numbers of two local physiotherapists so he will be contacting them this week. Meanwhile he's still doing the exercises the hospital therapist gave him to keep his tendons from shortening and his muscles mobile.
